History Archive

It has been Farm Credit’s privilege to contribute to the strength of rural America. Documenting that history of helping the nation grow has revealed a variety of archived materials that capture our journey alongside rural communities. The History Archive brings a selection of these together to provide perspective on eight distinctive eras of Farm Credit history.

Founding the System

1908-1918

In 1908 an executive commission to study farm problems identified a shortage of affordable rural credit. Legislation spurred the creation of the Federal Farm Loan Board in 1916 and the Federal Land Bank System the next year.
