Paulette's Perspective

Over the past 35 years, Paulette L. Pyle has provided unmatched passion and advocacy on behalf of farmers, ranchers, foresters and rural communities in Oregon.

Serving as director of grassroots efforts with Oregonians for Food and Shelter (OFS), Paulette was instrumental in defeating a local ballot initiative that would have banned aerial application of herbicides on some of Oregon's most productive forest land. Prior to her retirement, she tirelessly engaged rural Oregonians in the struggle to protect their ability to profitably operate. She energetically carried the message of the need for a strong rural economy to the Oregon Legislature and was instrumental in passing vital "right to farm and forest" laws.

Time after time, Paulette led successful efforts to defeat legislation designed by urban legislators unfamiliar with industries that would be severely limited by restrictions on the tools available to producers. She’s worked to unite Oregon’s natural resource communities to productively engage extremists and environmental activists and educate the public who influence elected officials and policy makers, especially on the use of pesticides.

“Most satisfying is that our Oregon natural resource families now stand together on issues impacting them and have a tremendous positive impact at all levels of government and in public forums,” she says. “The OFS model for engaging grassroots efforts serves as a national model to bring our farmers and foresters together when faced with challenges to their businesses and communities.”

In recognition of her efforts, Paulette has earned the gratitude Oregon's natural resource family and the respect of those on the other side of the issues. Her list of honors includes the Ted Young Stewardship Award from Oregon Forest Industries Council, the Ag Connection Award from Oregon AgriBusiness Council, the Distinguished Service Award from the Northwest Food Processors Association, and the Seedsman of the Year award from the Oregon Seed Council.
